How would you describe your style of music for those who haven't heard you yet?
My music is very conversational and real. I write almost everything from my heart. I love a great lyric with a good story.
What is your main focus now? (Writing songs, playing showcases, looking for a deal, etc?)
My main focus lately has been writing but I'm also in the process of looking for a new record deal.
In what ways do you feel you have changed (if any) since your album, "Where I Belong"?
I've matured as a person and as an artist. My songwriting has gotten so much stronger. I think taking some time off to focus on getting the music right has changed everything. The new music will be more ME than ever before.
Do you have a favorite song on your EP, Only Lonely Girl? If so, what is it and why is it your favorite song?
"Only Lonely Girl" is my favorite song because of how conversational it is. I have such a good memory of the night John and I wrote that song. It just flowed out so easily. It's one of those songs that I think anyone can relate to.
What kind of songs do you look for (or write) when you go into the studio to record albums?
I like a song with a unique melody and story. Songs that make me feel something whether it makes me laugh or makes me cry.
Who are some of the other artists/songwriters you have written with or for?
I've had songs recorded by Martina McBride, Blake Shelton, Katrina Elam, Lila McCann, Erika Jo, and Kenny Loggins.
What is your favorite song that you've written overall and why?
"Me and Emily" - because of the impact it's had on so many lives. It's wonderful when you know something you've written has made a difference even if it's just in one life. I still get e-mails daily from women who've been in abusive relationships that say Me and Emily changed their lives. That's a big thing.
Where do you find the ideas and inspirations when writing songs?
Out of thin air... I believe that there are song angels and we just have to sit down at the piano or with a guitar and let them speak through us. Very rarely do I have a specific idea when I write. I'm really sensitive to what's going on around me at all times so I use that energy to write and I believe that's why a lot of my songs are conversational verses catchy.
How would you describe the whole process of recording your new EP and what is a typical day in the studio like for you?
Making this EP was an awesome experience. I used my favorite musicians and we rented a studio out for a whole day and recorded the songs. Everyone was involved in the creative process which was so much fun. A day in the studio consists of a lot of coffee and junk food.
What goals have you accomplished so far and what do you still hope to accomplish with your music career?
I've truly accomplished every goal I've ever set for myself. Now it's just a matter of building on that. I guess I would like to have a number one song someday as artist or songwriter. That would be the ultimate.
What is your motivation behind your accomplishments and what continues to motivate you?
My love of music always has and always will be my motivation.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life (music related or not)?
My grandmother, Adah. She's the strongest woman I've ever known. She can do anything from paint the most beautiful water colors to lay carpet in a house. I've always admired her because she's not afraid of anything. No one can ever tell her she can't do something because she'll do it and then do it again.
If you could collaborate with anyone musically, who would it be and why?
John Mayer - I think he's a great songwriter and his music is inspiring to me.
I know you co-write frequently with your husband, John Lancaster and he plays on your EP as well. Can you tell us more about those experiences and how it feels to be able to work together with him?
John and I were working together long before we started dating so it comes naturally to us. Writing with John is like breathing. It's just supposed to be. He's the music man and I'm the story teller. It's a perfect co-writing situation.
What do you like about touring?
I love the bus, the band, the stage, and the fans. What do you dislike? Being away from my dogs and not being able to find time to write.
Do you have a favorite song to perform live?
Better Off Now - This is a Will Hoge song that just rocks.
What do you like to do on the road in your free time?
Rest or explore the town that I'm in.
While you're on the road, how do you balance your career with your family and friends?
John is usually with me so that makes it a lot easier. Thank goodness for cell phones.
What is the most difficult part of the music industry in your opinion?
The politics of the business. Too many people running things that don't have music in their hearts - just money on their minds.
What advice would you give to those who plan to get into the music business?
Be patient and have a strong persistence. Don't give up.
Is there anything you would like to say to all your fans and all our readers?
Just that life is good and I can't wait to get back out on the road so I can visit with everyone.
